Since 1997

Officially Established in 1997 to promote and present African art, creativity and culture in its purest and most authentic form, Nimbus Galleries Limited has been at the forefront of pioneering new energies and inspiring generations of artists and curators within the dynamic continental art space. Our journey into the unknown began in 1999 when we organized Nigeria’s first public art auction at the prestigious Muson Centre in Ikoyi Lagos, Nigeria.

The event broke sales records and acted as the much needed catalyst for the present boom in the secondary art market on the continent. It encouraged the birth of numerous local art and auction houses focused on the marketing of African art which in turn led to the emergence of global players on the now vibrant Nigerian/African art scene. Having played a significant part in the present African art renaissance, today’s Nimbus is happy to assume the role of elder statesman within the industry.Perched precariously on the Bogobiri roof top (overlooking our third manifestation on Maitama Sule Street in Ikoyi Lagos) the new Nimbus surveys its ever growing landscape like a giant albatross in search of new horizons.

With a growing on-line presence and an eye for spotting and nurturing new talent, our latest incarnation embraces a familiar identity as licensed fine art valuers and appraisers of African art; mediating between artists, collectors, insurance brokers and money market financiers. Drawing from over four decades of experience in the world of African creativity, we now anticipate the need to create essential structures and building blocks to sustain the fast evolving African art market place. Led by the visionary minds behind both the Nimbus and Bogobiri phenomena, our team of artists, curators, appraisers, historians and administrators are poised to once again reshape the glocal (global and local) artistic firmament.

Our aim is to demystify true African aesthetics by releasing the intrinsic value of art works and transforming them from mere objects of desire in to collateral assets within historically relevant cultural and financial market places. With the release by Malthouse Press of our creative blue print and journey so far predictably titled; “Nimbus; Mind Body and Soul,” the gospel according to the Nimbus is on the verge of reaching a much more diverse international audience. In the light of the above and having considered the below, we invite you to join us as we open this new chapter in our unfolding saga.
